Business Intelligence is a process of data analysis that presents data as information that is usable across a company or an organisation. The presented information can be an important support for decision makers or managers in making decisions. Business Intellligence therefore affects all industries, as every company can transform their operations by using their data. Nevertheless, there are of course industries that use business intelligence in a more advanced way, such as healthcare, information technology or education.
Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence solution that allows you to easily model, visualize and distribute company data. Its interface allows you to create customized reports with the key performance indicators of a company, an organization or a brand. Thanks to artificial intelligence, Power BI makes it possible to quickly obtain answers to questions related to the company’s activity and also to share them with the relevant employees. Microsoft Power BI is the reference for interactive reporting.
Power BI allows you to correlate and visualize all the data of a company in order to facilitate the decision making process. The design of the dashboard makes it possible to identify, at a glance, the important data required for decision-making. Power BI makes this data accessible to all members of an organization, allowing them to rely on reliable and verified data that is updated in real time.
The DA-100 exam enabled learners to master the finer nuances of data modeling, visualization and analysis with Power BI. With this certification (Microsoft Certified Data Analyst Associate), you could demonstrate your skills and improve your job prospects. The PL-300 exam serves exactly the same purpose as the DA-100. However, Microsoft has made a number of changes to content and weighting.
These changes are in line with the evolutions made within other Microsoft certifications (such as Azure or Microsoft 365). The change of code (DA to PL) is primarily intended to place Power BI within the Power Platform (and not within the Data Platform). Prior to this, there was some confusion as to which platform was responsible for Power BI.
PL-300 certification certifies skills and experience in data analysis using Power BI. It focuses in particular on data modeling, visualization and analysis. The PL-300 certification exam consists of 5 main parts:
Preparation
The candidate must be able to obtain data from different sources within the company, to profile this data and to identify any anomalies. Finally, the data needs to be cleaned, transformed and uploaded onto the platform.
Modeling
The PL-300 certification confirms that you are capable of creating and developing a data model, by creating tables, calculated columns and hierarchies. In addition you will be able to create metrics using DAX and implement Time Intelligence. Furthermore, you need to know how to use CALCULATE in order to manage filters and use basic statistical functions to dynamize data, as well as create semi-additive measures. Finally, you will to be able to optimize the performance of the model you’ve created, by identifying underperforming KPI’s, relationships and visuals.
Visualization
Once you’ve passed the PL-300 exam, you’ll be able to create reports and add visualization elements using R and Python. You’ll also be able to create and configure dashboards and pin report pages to them. Finally, you’ll know how to enrich your reports to make them user-friendly: configuring bookmarks, creating customized tooltips, editing and configuring interactions between visuals in particular.
Analysis
Once PL-300 certified, you’ll be able to enhance your reports to reveal information that is often crucial to companies. In particular, you’ll know how to apply conditional formatting, slicers and filters, analyze the top N, explore the statistical summary, use the Q&A visual and Quick Insights function for reports, reference lines with the Analytics help pane, as well as the Play Axis function and create customized visuals. Finally, you’ll have the ability to perform advanced analysis, repairing outliers and analyzing other more precise data for use by artificial intelligence.
Deployment and maintenance of deliverables
The final component of the PL-300 certification includes dataset management, in order to modify and update your reports. In addition, this competency will confirm that you are able to create and manage workspaces to share reports and data with your organization’s collaborators, and that you are notably able to create a deployment strategy that meets your company’s needs.
The certification
The PL-300 certification is particularly demanded by companies as the demand for analysis is rising.
Since 2022, the PL-300 exam has replaced the DA-100. And while the objective of the exam remains the same, there are a number of differences in the weighting of content. Microsoft’s idea is to provide better coverage of the various subject areas offered. The topics “Analyze” and “Visualize” for example have been consolidated into a seperate section. In the same way, modeling and deployment topics have been strengthened as well. Finally, the PL-300 has been extended by a new section named “Cleaning, transforming and loading data”. It introduces useful features of Power Query’s data profiling tools.
As you might have seen, the difference is mainly a general reorganization of the exam structure, rather than a replacement or abandonment of certain fundamental parts. Apart from these changes, the exam is identical, in terms of duration, target, objectives, prerequisites, number of questions and formats.
The PL-900 certification is the first certification dedicated to the Power Platform, enabling companies to improve their operating results. It covers the fundamentals of the platform,
including the following 5 topics:
It is aimed in particular at business analysts seeking to improve corporate productivity with Power Platform. In particular, they will be able to automate core business processes with Power Automate, perform analysis with Power BI, act more efficiently by creating simple Power Apps experiences, and create powerful chatbots using Power Virtual Agents.
The certifications offered by Microsoft assess skills developed on its own tools. The first two letters of each certification indicate the tool in question: PL for “Power Platform”, DA for “Data Analyst” (entirely on Power BI) or AZ for Azure. The number following these two letters indicates the level assessed: 900 for an introduction, and 100 for an expert level. In Microsoft terms, these levels are referred to as “Fundamentals” and “Associate” respectively.
Thus PL-900 stands for “Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals” and introduces the four solutions included in Power Platform:
The PL-300 certification, “Microsoft Data Analyst Associate” focuses on Power BI and evaluates the ability to run a Business Intelligence project completely autonomously, from data retrieval over the creation of dashboards adapted to the needs of each department. Our PL-300 training will help you prepare for this exam, with hands-on practice on the Power BI tool itself, a multiple-choice exam corrected during the training, and an official Microsoft mock exam that you can take at any time after the training to simulate the exam conditions.
At the end of the course, the validation of the PL-300 certification enables you to prove that you are capable of developing an end-to-end Business Intelligence project and that you master every aspect of the tool: information retrieval, preparation, modelling and finally visualisation.
This certification is an invaluable asset when applying for a job in a company that uses Power BI. You will be able to use the title of “Microsoft Data Analyst Associate” to differentiate yourself from other candidates.
Role-based certifications such as the PL-300 are valid for one year from the date of issue.
Other so-called fundamental certifications, such as the PL-900, are valid for life: they have no expiry date.

The Power BI PL-300 certification, also known as Analyzing Data with Microsoft Power BI, is an excellent proof of competence for analysts in Data and Business Intelligence. According to the Burning Glass website, which bases its analysis on thousands of job offers, the number of vacancies requiring Power BI skills is set to increase by over 34% in the next ten years. A good reason to get trained and certified in this revolutionary tool.
